Irkutsk homes had hand-carved wooden window frames much more ornate than this one.
We watched this kid carry a heavy bucket of  water (or paint?) back to
his house. His mom was waiting at the wooden gate for him
just down the way.

smokestacks in Irkutsk Russia
One of the first of many smokestacks we will see that dot the
otherwise beautiful landscape of Russian cities and countryside.

trans siberian
Mongolian traders on the trans siberian train
Mongolian traders waving their wares, transforming the train into makeshift shops. Quick spurts
of loud, chaotic business during stops make getting on and off the train an exercise itself.
The frenetic energy of shoppers and merchants got worst during stops
in small towns. We saw lots of grabbing, screaming, bargaining, fighting, even stealing.
Unfortunately, these rough and often drunk Mongolian traders give the
other Mongolians a bad name. The Russians on the train didn't like them much either.

Brian Schaller on Trans Siberian Railroad Looking through Window
We were very lucky to have a nice Russian mother and daughter to
share our cabin with us. We met other travelers on the train with horror stories of
their Mongolian trader cabin mates. Almost every window except for a
few like this one was converted into a store front.
After 4 days, we arrived in Vladimir.

suzdal
Brian and Susana Schaller in Suzdal Russia
You must visit Suzdal. It's less than an hour away
from Vladmir and a gem of a place. We're at the Suzdal Kremlin.

Suzdal Russia Church
Suzdal's very peaceful marketplace. Without smokestacks, old Soviet style apartment buildings,
or cable car lines to obscure your view, Suzdal is the idyllic place to visit for artistic inspiration.

Suzdal Russia Church with Nun
Suzdal gave us a taste of what a slower pace of life is like,  Russian style.
We caught this nun sweeping the front porch of this small chapel.

more than offensive.

   Susana Schaller in Moscow
Our host of the day, Valentina invited us for lunch. We then took a
nice walk to the nearby monastery and lake.
